Kona Fishing Charters FAQs

Learn all about our Kona fishing charters, what’s included, and what to bring with you. Check out our most frequently asked questions that have been answered by our captain and crew over the years. If you have a question that’s not covered here, please contact us for more information. We hope you’ll have all the info you need to plan your next fishing adventure!

We are located below the Harbor House restaurant in Honokohau Harbor marina slip D-4.  Our captain and crew will meet you at the back of TANTRUM and help you get safely on board. If you’re having trouble finding the boat just give the captain a call or text and he’ll help direct you there.  It is a small harbor, but it’s easy to get turned around if it’s your first time.  They will take a few minutes to introduce themselves and familiarize you with the boat and where to find things and you’ll be off.

We typically start our full or ¾ day charters at 6:30 am-7:00 am depending on the time of year, but if you have a special request just let us know when you’re booking.  Half-day charters typically leave in the morning or mid-day around 12 noon.

We do provide a light breakfast (papaya yogurt parfait) and sandwiches for lunch.  If you desire something different, you are welcome to grab something else and bring it on the boat.  There are a couple of marina stores located near our slip where they sell sandwiches, snacks, beverages, etc.  In addition to breakfast and lunch that we provide, you are welcome to bring anything you like with you, the boat has coolers, water, and ice on board.

If you have a special request, please let us know well ahead of your trip.

We always try our best to be the best when it comes to fishing results, but these wild animals don’t always play the game the way we want them too! That’s why our team work extremely hard to ensure your trip is an enjoyable one, regardless of the outcome of the fishing. While it’s not obligatory, tipping is very much appreciated and a part of the culture in the sport fishing industry. The industry standard tip amount is 20% of the total trip cost.

We certainly do! Our 41′ G&S is the perfect record, light tackle or flyfishing platform as it’s extremely maneuverable and capable of backing down at high speeds! We have plenty of experience with this style of fishing and would love to help you get your name in the record book!

Seldom do we get inclement weather, but it can happen.  If this happens, we will do our best to re-schedule your trip for another day during your stay, or if no other options are available, we will refund 100% of any money paid for your fishing trip.

First and foremost, a great attitude with lots of positive vibes – the fish love it! Apart from that, please bring adequate sun protection including protective clothing, sunglasses, hat/visor and sunscreen (no spray sunscreen please!).

Although our weather and water are generally flat and calm, if you’re prone to seasickness then as a precaution it would be wise to limit alcohol consumption the night before your charter. There are also plenty of over-the-counter preventative motion sickness options that can be purchased at your local drugstore. If your planning your trip well ahead of time, a physician can prescribe prescription patches that work great too.

We provide a light breakfast (papaya yogurt parfait), as well as sandwiches for lunch. We have bottled water and ice onboard at all times.  There are a couple of marina stores located near our slip where they sell sandwiches, snacks, beer, etc. You are welcome to bring anything you like with you, the boat has two refrigerators to keep things cool.

We have you covered with all the finest tackle and lures, so no need to bring any of that along.

Yes! We are happy to cut and bag as much fish as you can reasonably enjoy during your stay. Common meat fish we encounter are ahi (yellowfin tuna), mahi mahi (dorado), ono (wahoo) and short bill spearfish. We can offer some great recipes and/or some great restaurants that will cook your fish for you.

Please note that we do reserve the right to keep larger yellowfin tuna to sell.

ABSOLUTELY, we love hosting families! We are licensed to carry up to six passengers. We do ask that if there are 2 or more children under the age of 10, that there are at least two adults on board to supervise. This is a private charter you will not be sharing the boat with anyone else aside from our captain and crew.

No, the state of Hawaii does not require fishing licenses.
